Should Berea allow the sales of alcohol by the drink in restaurants? Should Richmond allow sales of alcohol on Sundays?

Hey Anon, what are you afraid of? Mighty big person hiding behind an anonymous alias lobbing insults and impugning people's reputations. Or maybe you're just too illiterate, incompetent, or inept to figure out how to get your own login?

You think I'm drunk all the time just because I want the choice to have a drink at a restaurant around here? Get a life.

Following your logic, it should be me and the other winos that side with you Bible-thumpers. After all, in our drunken stupors we're bound to plow our vehicles into an innocent person at any minute. So, the retirement community residents obviously have more time to party and should be largely in favor of by-the-drink sales!

**** Could the arrival of retirement communities change that the next time the issue comes up for a vote? Could be. ****

I would think, that older retired people, being closer to the end than the winos here, would opt for the religious scene, and follow their lead in community matters.

So, no alcohol for Berea!

Sorry Singdawg, you just gotta stay sober.

I love your joke, Singdawg.

Last night someone was lamenting the fact that Lancaster beat Berea to the punch. They further lamented the fact that Berea will only continue to get fast food like eateries here in town unless we get alcohol by the drink.

Could the arrival of retirement communities change that the next time the issue comes up for a vote? Could be.

In response to Anonymous on 8/25, ever heard the one that goes:

What's the difference between Jews and Baptists? Jews don't recognize Jesus as the Messiah and Baptists don't recognize each other in the liquor store.

Here's another one that might make you laugh, but it makes sense if you're a conspiracy theorist (which I'm not, but the explanation makes sense): Berea will not go wet because the speakeasies of your post are in cahoots with the churches and the college to keep Berea dry. Now, I can't imagine bootleggers (no matter what loophole they cite, it is what they're doing) making more money illegally than if they were allowed to sell by the drink, but it kind of follows along the same lines as the Mafia opposing legalized sports gambling.

Alcohol, hard liquor too, is more available in Berea than you would think. Berea Country Club along with five other places! But that's OK. These are them private places where it's OK. 'Cause only special people go there.

Perhaps you should drop in one afternoon and take a look at some of your alcohol oponents haveing a cold one or two or..... I bet the the first words out of your mouth will probably be, "Will, I'll be damn...a speakeasy" Whadda ya know...

Thanks for the support, Josh. It never used to really matter to me that Berea was dry. It was just a fact of life. Recent developments have changed my mind.

With the usual economic suspects acting up and the maintenance/improvements needed around town (utility infrastructure, better access to the Wal-Mart area), it just doesn't make sense to me that citizens would turn away a revenue source that would pass some of the cost on to out-of-towners! Everyone's griping that tourism is down, yet we're keeping the better-known chain restaurants as well as who knows how many potential local owners with good ideas for restaurants from developing. When was the last time you heard of 2 people spending $30-40 for dinner at McD's like the wife and I do at Madison Garden or Outback? 3% of the $5-10 at the fast food chains is going to fill the coffers quickly!

Hooray for Lancaster and hang in there singdawg! Another Kentucky community has just broken the shackles that the Hell and Damnation crowd had on them. Martin Luther King said it best, “Free at last. Free at last…”

It is amazing to me how anyone can believe that there will be more drunk driving if Berea sells alcohol. It’s just another lame argument from the Berea’s controlling religious sect. If everyone who drinks a beer is an alcoholic, then everyone who takes a prescription drug is a drug addict. I’ve eaten in many good restaurants that serve alcohol and have never seen anyone stagger out drunk. By the same token, I have filled my prescription many times and have never seen anyone leave doped up. Maybe broke, but never high.

It all goes back to the archaic beliefs of a century ago. There are still people who believe that our earth is only 5,000 years old and handling poisonous snakes proves how close to God you are.

Let me see—Snakes good—Beer bad! Maybe some sweaty fire-breathing preacher can enlighten me.

Here's a likely scenario for you, Anonymous. The accepted rate at which a healthy male body burns off alcohol is 1 drink per hour. The 1 drink equivalent for beer is a 12 oz beer. Assuming I order a 12 oz beer with the obligatory appetizer, make the beer last until my steak is consumed, eat dessert with the Coke you say I COULD have had with the steak, pay the tab, and say goodbye to the friends in the parking lot (this could be an hour in and of itself, I am a Southerner after all), I should theoretically and realistically blow close to nothing if a police officer were to administer a breathalyzer.

Hate to tell you this, but the above scenario is also the most likely for people out to eat with friends. I would contend that most people would drink to enjoy the beer with dinner as opposed to pounding beer after beer to get wasted. The latter (the ones getting wasted for your simple mind) are out there, and I abhor their behavior.

Hey Anonymous (Mr. Green), did I mention anything about having to drink a beer every time I eat? How dare you judge me and deign to think that you have any idea what my family or social life is like. Instead of thinking you know me, I'll tell you who I am. I am a Southern graduate, a career Army soldier (7.5 yrs in Big Army, going on 10 in the KY Guard with the last 3 being active duty either for a year in Iraq or working Active Guard when we got back) a summa cum laude EKU graduate with a Bachelor's of Science (did it in 2.5 yrs with some help from Advanced Placement classes at Southern and a few college classes taken when active duty workload permitted)Married, no kids (yet), no credit card debt, 2 out of 3 vehicles paid off (1 on time, 1 about 36 months early) with the third paid off by Christmas (about 24 months early)...do I fit your profile for a druggie alcoholic?

As for your peer pressure remark, get a life. If you met my peers or knew what we did in the military stateside, you'd realize what a jackass you are for supposing you know me. My peers are some of the finest people in the world who have my back in real confrontation (ie. when bullets are flying in your general direction) not just in some piddling argument over you telling me what I CANNOT do because YOU don't think it's OK. If you don't support alcohol sales, don't go to places that would sell it! It's that simple. YOUR attitude is exactly why outsiders think Berea is the backwater where they filmed Footloose (fyi: that is one of those filthy talkies that Satan commissioned to further erode the morals of society).

Get out of your tar-paper shack every once in a while and maybe you'll see just how many people are well-versed in drug abuse and see its effects on a near daily basis. Police officers, social workers, doctors, nurses, pharmacists, teachers, firemen, paramedics, guidance counselors, soldiers....do I need to continue?

My point is that sometimes it's nice to kick back and enjoy a good beer with a good meal in a good place with good friends. Having the option to do that in my hometown where my dollars can stay local would be the icing on the cake. If you ever did anything more than walk to your mailbox to collect your check, you'd understand that having a cold beer or two at the end of an extremely grueling day is for some people the adult equivalent of the bell on the last day of school.

"Why should I (or PA or anybody else with an iota of personal responsibility) have to leave OUR town (yes, Berea is not just YOUR city, Anonymous)to have a beer with our steaks?"

You could just have a Coke with your steak and not have to drive home after drinking. See, your attitude is exactly what the poster is speaking of. So powerful is this thirst for alcohol that you even think you need it to eat.

I feel sorry for your family, having to put up with this no doubt daily. And all that drug info you was spouting about. I for one had no idea, but can only imagine the kind of person that would be versed on that. As well as how they learned it.

I saw this is hoping to help you.

Seek help before you end up killing some innocent person.

PS: I know peer pressure is the cause of most drug abuse. Is the other guy you mentioned pressuring you into illegal activities? Drop a dime on him. BPD can help.
