Topic: Fallout from Future Bypass

Recently a representative of Windstream knocked on our door. He wanted an easement to put new telephone poles across the front of our property, thats in our front yard. We live just over the hill on the left side of US 25 North going towards Richmond. The current poles are on unoccupied farm land on the other side of the road. There are four houses this will affect. Now Windstream came back and told us they did not need an easement....they will put the poles on the road right of way which is still in our front yards.

The state condemed property on the front of the homes here for expansion of US 25 to four lane and the homeowners were paid. The state did not tell the homeowners that Windstream would be putting poles on that right of way.

Beware of dealing with any of these entities. They have only their well being in mind.

A good question is, why don't they put the service underground. The answer is money. Why would they spend the money when the homeowner's can bear the cost in reduced property values for them while they install eye sores on their property.

Heads up to all you folks that live where access to the new bypass is a factor. Ask a lot of questions about utilities, etc. before agreeing to a settlement with the state.

Fallout from Future Bypass;

There are plans being made to condemn property in many places in Madison County for new cell phone (or something) towers. If you don't sell for what the county is going to pay you, they'll condemn the property and get it even cheaper! Bad taste in this old guys mouth!

....important issue though. If this is happening to property owners on the first leg of the bypass, it will happen to property owners on the second and third legs, too.

Interesting question, Chuck. You are right, the companies really aren't going to do anything (spend any more money) than they have to. If they can get away with hosing property owners, that's probably not their biggest concern.

What I'd like to know: for the beautification of the city, can municipalities require these companies to underground their utilities if the poles are a blight on the city landscape?

Maybe because Windstream is a telephone provider, they operate under the protection of the state utilities commission, so you couldn't impose regulations on them.
