Topic: New Upgrade
Hello reader,
As you may have noticed kynews.org has a topic based discussion forum, the Town Hall. Now you can start your own discussion topic and people can respond accordingly. This initiative was started by a concern raised by some Town Hall participants.
The advantages of this organization method are:
1. It allows newbies to address a concern without having to read all the posts.
2. Ideas are organized better and are more accessible.
I hope you will like the new system and take advantage of the technology,
Sincerely,
Roland Mai

I think it would be great to have a place to post ideas for "life improvement" in the cities of Richmond and Berea. Perhaps a link for each. Of course, it's only useful if our city council folks, sheriff & deputies, mayors, etc. read it! |

Thanks for your suggestion:
The problem with it, I have found, is twofold: First, people then use the message board to settle vendettas with businesses or business owners they don't like. A couple of local restaurant owners, for example, were slammed for personal reasons. Or, conversely, people then try to use it to promote their businesses. i.e. "I just went to Emma Jean's Electrolysis and my husband says he doesn't recognize me without the hair on my back! Thank you Emma Jean!" Also, sadly, spambots are becoming more sophisticated, I fear. So if it was a totally open, anonymous post format, you'd spend a lot of time wading through ads for Viagra, Cialis and Lipitor instead of real messages. |

Something for the Site Improvement section: I would like the ability to post anonymously under any topic area. I think folks would give a lot more honest feedback about businesses, etc! |

The forums in the town hall section need to be organized in such a typicak forum hiarachy IE.
General Topic (Madison Co. Schools) Original Posted Topic (Spring Icre Cream Social) Posted response to Topic (I like ice cream! ) This format allows people to respond directly to the myraid of topics posted and discuss each issue in direct fashion without having to search thru long post lists to find the post they wish to respond to or to come across as being off topic. Many examples of this type can be found to use as a template for a well working user friendly discussion board. |

Andy- forgive me if this has been asked before as I don't want to read through all the old post. I wish there was a way to do a search by word/subject in all the town hall post as there was something that was posted some time ago that I wanted to read again, but couldn't find it.
Will this be an option in the future? Thanks for the great site! |

This message was posted in the Feedback Section:
"How do you get to leave a comment on the Town Hall section? Not the most user friendly environment." Andy: Sorry about that. I felt it was necessary to implement a password system. All you have to do is click REGISTER, enter a first and last name (it can EVEN be your real name if you want!), chose an ID (Mickey Mouse, SoccerMOM, Skatin'Dude1988...whatever) then enter a VALID email address. Then the authorization will be sent to your email account, you click on the link, and presto, your in. People are concerned about anonymity. Rest assured that I do not know the identities of the people who log on. Like everybody else, I only know their screen names. I just wanted there to be a record somewhere just in case somebody posted something blatently defamatory or illegal. Sorry for the inconvenience! |

People are beginning to trickle back onto the message boards. I'm getting some scattered emails bouncing back from people who've tried to register but their email address was invalid. When you try to sign up, make sure you provide a valid email address or your registration process won't work. |

Thanks for the encouragement! I suspect requiring registration could slow traffic here for a little bit, but legally speaking, I didn't see another option. And again, the identity of the people posting really isn't compromised. I have no idea who they are, so it's pretty much the way it was. |

You're right, Scout.
Also, this is pretty typical of internet forums (fora?!? Anonymi in the fora?) like Yahoo groups. You always need to register for these things. In fact, some of the groups I've joined in the past require that members be approved by the group administrator. There can't be total anonymity or the site owner takes on sole (and scary) legal liability for the postings. |
