My Time Coffee & Tea in Richmond is a place of happy contradictions. Located on the Eastern Bypass behind Taco Bell, the shop offers the healthy, tasty menu of a metropolitan coffee house, but service is provided with a personalized, hometown touch.

It’s a place for people on the go, with friendly and efficient baristas inside and even quick curb side service for those who call ahead. Yet it’s also an inviting, comfortable venue for meeting, doing homework, or just to relax and enjoy a great cup of coffee and quiet conversation. Child care is available as well during designated times for just $1 an hour most mornings and evenings, for busy moms or dads who need their own "time out."

My Time Coffee & Tea’s unique and pleasant character was by design, not chance. "We see ourselves as an alternative to the corporate coffee house,” said Darrell Speltz, who co-owns My Time Coffee & Tea along with his wife, Heather, and Dr. Tim and Liz Micek. “We’re doing this out of love for the atmosphere of a coffee house. It’s important to have a refuge from the day, and we can offer a diversion from the daily routine."

What sets My Time Coffee & Tea apart from the national chain coffee stores is its people, who make it their job to treat visitors as guests, not just customers.

“Our baristas know people by name. They know what’s happening in their lives,” Speltz said. “I think it provides a more enriching community experience than just picking up your double latte and walking out the door.”

Because the coffee house is located right next to the Richmond Athletic Club, My Time Coffee & Tea also caters to customers seeking healthy and tasty alternatives to fast food, including the store’s popular protein shakes. The shop also offers lite fare such as quiches, soups and sandwich wraps.

“We are looking for a way to expose more of Richmond to a healthy lifestyle, and we thought the diverse group that comes through a coffee shop is the perfect mix for us to reach different segments of the population,” Speltz said, adding that the end of the year is a time when most people begin to think about taking off extra pounds. “For anybody, whether they are fitness minded or not, we’re coming into that time of year when everybody makes their New Year’s resolutions. A meal replacement shake would be a perfect alternative for virtually anybody who’s trying to lose weight,” Speltz said.

In addition to great coffee, delicious food and an assortment of treats, My Time Coffee & Tea will soon be offering live entertainment beginning in January, and during the warmer months, live entertainment will be offered out on the deck outside the store.

My Time Coffee & Tea is also a good place to do some unique and convenient holiday shopping, offering gift certificates, holiday gift bags, and an assortment of fine coffees.

The shop also caters special events or meetings, and you can call ahead and place your order at 626-0950 to receive convenient, drive-up service.

My Time Coffee & Tea is open Monday through Thursday from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Fridays from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Child care is available to customers for $1 an hour from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday, and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Speltz, his partners, and staff invite the people of Madison County to enjoy the wonderful coffee and welcoming atmosphere at My Time Coffee & Tea – a place where good taste meets good health.

Said Speltz, “Anybody in this town who loves coffee, if they haven’t checked out what we’re doing here, we’d love for them to come in and see us.”
