Congressman, Trump Critic John Lewis Coming to Berea

01.23.17 10:53 AM – Andy McDonald
It's probably safe to say one civil rights leader won't be wearing a "Make America Great Again" baseball cap when he comes to Berea in May.

Georgia congressman and noted civil rights activist John Lewis is slated to be the commencement speaker at Berea College next spring, it was announced last week.

Congressman Lewis made headlines leading up to the inauguration of President Donald Trump by declaring he would not attend Trump’s swearing-in. Lewis told NBC News he was staying away from the ceremony because he did not view Trump as a legitimate president. Then-President-Elect Trump denounced Lewis in response, accusing the 5th district congressman of not doing enough to alleviate troubles in his district.

It wasn’t the first time Lewis opted to forgo a presidential inauguration. He and members of the Congressional Black Caucus, boycotted the inauguration of President George W. Bush in 2001 after a contentious recount in Florida.
