BEREA - Hopefully a would-be criminal got a message from above after the church van he or she stole got stuck and caught on fire.
The incident occurred Tuesday afternoon when witnesses on Holly Street called the Berea Fire Department with a report that a white van was observed burning near Sycamore Street.
Upon further investigation, a case that looked like it could be arson turned out to be a mistake by a would-be criminal, said Captain Ken Clark of the Berea Police Department.
"We found out it was a church van that had been stolen from the parking lot of the Church of God on Rash Road," Clark said. "But it really wasn't an arson. They got it stuck in the grass and got the engine so hot from trying to get it out that the van caught fire."
The suspect or suspects then abandoned the burning 1996 Dodge van, which was valued at $4,000.
When asked if the fire may have been divine retribution for stealing a church van, Clark quipped, "It's probably not a good idea to make the man upstairs mad."
The case is still under investigation.
