RICHMOND – The principal of a Madison County middle school was arrested over the weekend for driving under the influence as well as two other traffic violations.

According to court records, Bradley M. Winkler, 48, of Madison Middle School, was arrested at approximately 2:20 a.m. Saturday by a Madison County Sheriff’s Deputy.

Deputy Jonathan Moore’s complaint states the following:

Moore reported observing a 1999 red Ford Ranger traveling south on KY 2328 at a high rate of speed. When the vehicle approached a stop sign at the junction of Lexington Rd, the driver attempted to stop the vehicle, causing the tires to screech and the vehicle to skid. When the above vehicle did not come to a complete stop at the stop sign, Moore reported that he followed the vehicle for approximately two miles.

In his report, Moore further stated:

“While observing, above vehicle crossed the center line 4 separate times, was weaving inside the lane and was darting severely around curves. Attempted traffic stop on vehicle at the Jct. of 627 and Lexington Rd. Vehicle did not stop until approximately 1 mile further south on Lexington Rd. I approached the driver side door and above subject was the operator. Upon contact I could smell a strong odor of alcoholic beverage coming from operator. Operator failed all 3 FST (field sobriety tests). Subject refused contact with attorney and submitted to a breath test.”

Winkler was charged with disregarding a stop sign, reckless driving, and operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol/drugs - first offense.

In an appearance in Madison District Court, Winkler was released on his own recognizance by Judge Bill Clouse.

He is scheduled to appear in District Court on October 20.
