A Richmond couple filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against Pattie A. Clay Medical Center and one physician, alleging caretakers failed to properly treat a stroke victim.

According to Madison County Circuit Court documents, the suit was filed Apr. 24, by Terry Reeves and Carol Reeves, both of Richmond.

The lawsuit states that on Apr. 24, 2007, Terry Reeves was seen by his family physician, Dr. Anil Harrison. Reeves complained of numbness in his right foot, right lower leg, right hand and right lower arm, court documents state.

Harrison wrote a prescription for an MRI and CT, and instructed Reeves to go immediately to Pattie A. Clay to get medical tests, at which point, Harrison went to the hospital Emergency Room and was admitted immediately, according to the lawsuit.

Court documents further state:

“Dr. Gnanam Thambipillai, who was assigned to Terry's care came in and asked questions from a sheet, and once he found out that Terry chewed tobacco and drank beer at night, the Dr. said, 'you're an alcoholic with a tobacco problem,” and that he was going to write dismissal orders for him.”

The lawsuit alleges that Dr. Thambipillai refused to order the CAT scan and MRI.

Court documents further state:

“A male nurse called Dr. Picon the next morning and told her that Terry had had a stroke...” and that, “Dr. Picon [a neurologist] was overheard screaming at Dr. Thambipillai the next day at the nurses station saying that he was a general practioner and should have called her immediately when Terry came in.”

The complaint continues:

“Five days later as Terry was being discharged, Dr. Thambipillai came down to the lobby and told Terry in front of a friend 'I've made a mistake. I misdiagnosed you.”

The Reeves' lawsuit alleges that a failure to correctly diagnose Reeves on the initial visit led to subsequent medical problems:

“As a result of what Dr. Thambipillai did, and the failure of the Pattie A. Clay Regional Medical Center to properly treat Terry, he suffered a stroke, bleeding in his brian (sic) two other pin strokes, heart problems and a stroke on Easter Sunday of 2008 which was due to the negligence of Dr. Thambipillai and Pattie A. Medical Center for failing to provide him with the care they should have been expected to provide for him.”

Court documents state that at the time Reeves suffered a stroke, he was employed at Toyota South as an inventory control manager. The Reeves are seeking recovery of their financial losses and for suffering.

“Terry and Carol have incurred co-insurance charges, prescriptions, lost our home and car, suffered pain and mental anguish,” the lawsuit states. (story continues below)
