Looking at the Police reports and watching court on local channel. do you think we have a big drug problem? We have a lot of break ins and so on.
What can this community do to make this go away.
Steve Connelly answered:
I think drugs are a big problem in our community. Part of the solution is to be more aware.
For example, a recent three-part series in the Winchester Sun described the increasing number of deaths in Clark County attributable to drug overdoses (Between Jan 2005 and Mar 2006, Clark County averaged one death caused by drug overdose every 32 days. During 2005, 11 people, ranging in age from 19 to 52 died from overdoses, compared with 7 in 2004 and 6 in 2003). These articles described the growing incidence of how injuries can cause people to get hooked on drugs. It also pointed out the lack of treatment for people with drug problems from what ever source. It was a good beginning to community awareness in Clark County.
Berea needs more public attention given to our drug abuse. Perhaps our local papers could investigate and highlight its impact on our community. In addition, we need more effective enforcement efforts. We need more community education and committment to avoid or reduce legal and illegal drug use.
Its a tough and complicated problem. The solution begins with facing up to its danger and extent.
